8 Period Myths Every Indian Girl Has Heard (and What Doctors Actually Say)
Don't touch the pickle. Don't enter the kitchen. Don't wash your hair. If you grew up in India, you have heard these. Here are 8 period myths, and what doctors actually say.

Raise your hand if you were ever told, "Don't touch the pickle, it will spoil."
If you grew up in an Indian home, chances are you have heard at least a few of these. Some come with love, some with strict faces, and almost all of them come without an explanation.
So let's go through eight of them, and look at what doctors actually say.
Myth 1: "Don't touch the pickle, it will go bad"
Fact: Pickle gets spoiled by moisture, dirty spoons and poor storage. It has nothing to do with your period. You can touch it, eat it and serve it.
Myth 2: "Don't enter the kitchen"
Fact: There is no medical reason to stay out of the kitchen during your period. Your body is not unclean. Washing your hands and cooking normally is perfectly fine.
Myth 3: "Don't wash your hair or take a bath"
Fact: Bathing and washing your hair is safe, and it helps you feel fresh and comfortable. In fact, staying clean is important during your period, because it lowers the chance of infections and smell.
Myth 4: "Period blood is dirty or impure"
Fact: Period blood is a mix of blood and the lining of the uterus, which your body sheds each month. It is a normal, healthy process. It is not toxic and it is not dirty.
Myth 5: "Don't exercise or play sports on your period"
Fact: Light exercise, like walking, stretching or yoga, can actually ease cramps and improve your mood. If you feel very tired or in a lot of pain, rest. Otherwise, listen to your body and move if you feel okay.
Myth 6: "Don't eat sour food, curd or certain fruits"
Fact: There is no medical proof that curd, lemon, tamarind or any common food makes periods worse. A balanced diet with iron-rich food, like dal, green leafy vegetables, chana and jaggery, is far more helpful. Drink water, too.
Myth 7: "Painful periods are normal. Just bear it"
Fact: Mild cramps are common. But pain that stops you from going to school or work, or that doesn't ease with simple measures, is not something to just put up with. It can be a sign of a condition that a doctor can help with. Don't suffer in silence.
Myth 8: "You can't get pregnant during your period"
Fact: The chance is lower, but it is not zero. Sperm can live in the body for several days, and some women ovulate early, especially with short cycles. If you want to avoid pregnancy, don't rely on your period dates alone. Talk to a doctor about your options.
A note on faith and tradition
Many of these customs are part of family tradition or religious practice, and people hold them with real belief. This article is not here to argue about faith. It is only here to say that, medically, a period does not make a woman unclean or unsafe to touch food. What you do within your own beliefs is your choice.
What is actually worth worrying about
Please talk to a doctor if you notice:
Periods that are very heavy, soaking a pad every one to two hours
Periods that last more than seven days
Severe pain that stops you from doing normal things
Periods that suddenly stop or become very irregular
Bleeding between periods
Feeling dizzy, very tired or breathless during your period
How to talk to your family about it
You don't need to argue. A calm "the doctor says this is okay" is usually enough. You can also share this article. Many elders are simply repeating what they were told, and with good information they often change their mind.
Pass it on
Every girl deserves to learn about her body without shame. Send this to a friend, a sister or your daughter. And tell us in the comments: which myth did you hear the most?
